WELCOME

Welcome to The Lynchburg Cemetery and Church, located in Lee County, South Carolina. This website offers an easy and rewarding way to learn about this historic site. The church building and the 3-acre cemetery have been carefully maintained for centuries, making them a treasured part of the Lynchburg community. Although the church no longer has active services, we host an annual event on the second Sunday of every October, called Old Timey Day. This draws locals, those with family members interred there, and other visitors who have been interested in the property over the years. Preserving this site is important not only for its significant historical value but also because each soul has a story to tell. Our cemetery holds the histories of Lynchburg’s people, and every individual buried here has contributed to the life and legacy of this small South Carolina town. Our goal is to safeguard and preserve these histories.

A generous gift from one of our dedicated families has enabled us to add an interactive, searchable map to help locate ancestors and loved ones in our cemetery. A smartphone or a computer is all that is needed to “virtually wander the grounds” of our beloved cemetery. We hope this will encourage you to visit. It is open for strolling during all daylight hours.

The cemetery is more than a collection of stones—it is a place where memory and faith meet. The inscriptions speak of love, devotion, and trust in God’s promises, echoing the message proclaimed within the sanctuary. Together, church and cemetery testify to the enduring hope of the gospel and to the deep roots of Christian witness in Lynchburg.

Lynchburg Presbyterian Church.JPG

The Lynchburg Presbyterian Church, located in South Lynchburg, South Carolina, stands as both a spiritual and cultural landmark of the region. Its origins are closely tied to the movement of Scots and Scotch-Irish families into the area during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Many of the early congregants were descendants of Ulster Scots.

ANNUAL EVENTS

OLD TIMEY DAY

At 11:00 AM every year (since 2002) on the second Sunday in October, a church service is followed by a buffet of Southern home-cooked favorites. There is no charge, but the offering plate is passed for donations to the Lynchburg Methodist Church. A contribution bowl is available to help defray the cost of the catering.
This special event is similar to an old-fashioned “Homecoming” and has been a great success, often with three and sometimes four generations attending together.

Attendees are encouraged to dress as they would have done in the 1800s to early 1900s, but this is not required.  It is fun, however, to see the ladies in long skirts and the gentlemen in top hats.  The children enjoy seeing these “old-timey” outfits. They were especially fascinated when the minister rode to the front lawn of the church on a horse, which has been his custom for many years.

EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE

A sunrise service is organized and implemented by a dedicated group of members from the Lynchburg Methodist and Baptist Churches. It is held outdoors on the front lawn and steps of the Lynchburg Presbyterian Church; if rain is expected, the service is moved indoors. This is a meaningful way to begin your Easter, and everyone is invited.

Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Matthew 18:20 (KJV)

NEW ADDITIONS

The Board of Trustees of the Lynchburg Cemetery Association, Inc. was pleased to accept a very generous gift, in 2025, from a family whose ancestors are buried on our grounds. Their thoughtful contribution will enable us to undertake significant restoration and improvement projects for both our church and cemetery.

The funds will be used for many additions to the Cemetery and Church, including:

  • Establishing a Cremation Memorial Garden

  • Cemetery mapping and headstone preservation

  • A new website that includes a searchable map of gravesites

  • A modern digital management system for burial records

  • The future care of the cemetery and church

  • Restoration of the Church building, exterior and interior
